I drew a line with my finger
Deep into the sand.
I looked to the horizon,
My toes at the mark
And I cried.

You stood there,
Shaking slightly,
Impatient to rush in.
To the water’s edge
You went, and then dipped
Yourself right in.

I watched and smiled,
Squinted at the sun.

When the water meets my toes
I say, playful, I will come,
When the water meets my toes
I will see you in the deep.

I wait. It rises. Slowly.
You play. I sigh.
I close my eyes.

Then I feel the touch,
The swirl around the skin,
As the sea meets sand,
And my feet sink a little in.

I’m ready!

I look out to the sea,
But now it is too late -
Shadows are escaping,
The sun and you are gone.
I turn towards home.

Your shining skin,
Glistening, beaded with salt
The lightness of your way..
Oh, I miss it. I miss you.
But today was not my day.
