This cup.
Warm in hands,
Holding hot coffee.
Nestled in palms
As I look at the park.
Early birds are cooing,
To the drum of passing cars.

This cup.
The smooth porcelain
Against worn palms,
Heating, healing.
Its stripes uneven
Strokes of artist’s paint,
All the lines haphazard,
Bold with intention-
A sanctuary
And a prison.
Every line another year
Like life, as different
As they feel long.

This cup.
Chipped now fallen
Away from tired fingers.
The last of cold coffee,
A dark spill on light wood.
The birds sing louder,
Morning sounds emerge,
Through music and voice.
I wait a little longer now,
Then clear the mess away.
